A Day in the Life of a Biohazard Cleaner

When someone suggested I write a blog about a day in the life of a biohazard cleaner, my initial thought was, "That’s impossible – no two days are the same!" However, I soon realised it might be interesting to look back over the past week or so to reflect on the variety of enquiries we’ve received and the work we’ve completed as a team across all the franchise territories. Some of these jobs were pre-planned and booked in advance, while others were reactive, especially when an emergency or urgent situation arose that involved public safety or potential danger. Let’s take a look at just some of the work we’ve been doing or planning recently: Clearing areas where homeless people have been residing: This involved needle sweeps and extensive waste removal, including tents, mattresses, and general rubbish. Major flood works: One job was in a warehouse, and another affected three storeys of an office block. Needle sweeps in hostel environments: We conducted two needle sweeps to ensure safety. Oil spill clean-up: An extensive clean-up in a plant room due to an oil spill. Unattended death clean-up: This included a deep clean of a property that was heavily soiled. Sewage and faeces contamination in supermarkets: We had three call-outs to supermarkets where public and staff areas were contaminated by sewage and faeces. Crime scene clean and clear: We provided thorough cleaning and sanitising of a crime scene. Void property clear and clean: We cleaned and cleared a void property in preparation for future use. Declutter/clearing and cleaning of homes: Two referrals involved clearing homes where hoarding and poor physical and mental health were factors. One free declutter service: We provided a free declutter service to help a local resident. Phew! That’s quite a lot to take in. As you can see, the workload for a biohazard cleaner is incredibly varied, and not everything can be scheduled in advance. Sometimes we have to turn away work because we’re already busy with other jobs, while at other times, our diary is quieter, and we can accommodate more reactive jobs. Some jobs are quick fixes, while others take hours or even days to complete. The unpredictable nature of our work means that no two days are the same, and planning too far ahead can be tricky. As biohazard cleaners, we must be equipped and prepared for nearly any circumstance so that we can respond quickly to emergency calls. Whether it’s cleaning up after an incident or providing proactive services, we are always excited and ready to assist with any enquiry that comes our way.
